Vents

Vents#

UI Vents

Vents in FRI3D are created using the Compartment Inspector and under the Simulation Items Section

FRI3D Static Vents#

Static vents are windows/Doors etc which serve as openings between compartments or inside a compartment. A Static vent is created by invoking the following actions.

Simulation Items -> Vents -> Add Natural Vents

A default item with FVent_ prefix is created in the inspector. The 3D box icon can be dragged and dropped into the 3D area for placement of that vent.

FRI3D Powered Vents#

Simulation Items -> Vents -> Add Mechanical Vents

FRI3D Vents to CFAST and FDS#

Fire sources and vents in FDS are specified as boundary conditions. The ventilation system of individual compartments within a building is described using velocity boundary conditions. For example, fresh air can be blown into, and smoke can be drawn from, a compartment by specifying a velocity in the normal direction to a solid surface.

The directives generated by FRI3D are VENT primitives, and VENTS in FDS are boundary conditions which are associated with obstacles (OBST). Therefore, the implementation had to consider the intersection of the source object (fire) as depicted with the appropriate planes of intersection with the obstacle primitives as defined by the user in the 3D interface.
